Although September has seen many short weeks and some of our learning has followed a stop-start pattern, the learning in 1C has most definitely begun. This term in Math, our focus will centre on NUMBER CONCEPTS. Pulled directly from the Math prescribed learning outcomes for Grade One, the areas we will focus on most in term one are:
o Saying the number sequence, 0 to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.
o Recognizing, at a glance, and naming arrangements of up to 10 objects.
o ‘Counting on’ to determine the number of objects in one or more sets.
o Representing numbers to 10, concretely and pictorially.
o Estimating quantities by comparison.
o Saying one more, two more, one less and two less than a given number up to 20.
o Demonstrating an understanding of addition and subtraction of numbers to 12 with the use of manipulatives.
o Creating, extending, reproducing and describing repeating patterns.
A very important expectation in early numeracy competence involves students being able to SUBITIZE (to perceive the number of a group of items at a glance and without counting - with a sense of immediacy and automatically). We are practicing this skill by learning to use 10 frames.Incorporating technology into our Math lessons is an important component of our learning. Moreover, group-work facilitates collaboration and cooperative learning, both important catalysts to successful learning.
